Reiki is the oldest method of energy healing and is the basis from which all the other systems of spiritual healing latter developed. Reiki is a method of proper use of the universal life energy, but also Reiki is the energy itself, which is part of all things and all things are part of it. Reiki is a fundamental part of our existence, without us even being aware of it at all. The knowledge of Reiki, in its primordial form was lost with the passing of centuries, until the year 1922 when Reiki was reestablished by the Japanese monk Mikao Usui (1865-1926).
Usui devoted his life searching for the source of the healing techniques used by history's greatest healers such as Jesus and Buddha. The objective of Ushi was to find the root of all the different techniques for energy healing. He believed that they are just different manifestations of the same underlying principle. He studied and practiced the secret teachings of all major spiritual traditions - from Christianity to Hinduism, from Japanese Shinto to Tibetan Buddhism. He found answers, but he was never completely satisfied. He was still unable to discover the great secret of healing. Until, at the verge of giving up, already of old age he climbed the sacred mountain Koriama where he spent 21 days and nights in fasting and deep meditation. And at the end of the last day the big secret was revealed to him, he finaly understood the art of healing and he gave it the name of Reiki - from the words Rei meaning universal energy and Ki which means life energy.
Therefore we say that Reiki is universal life energy, as well as the method of its proper usage.

Reiki is not a religion nor it is a closed system. Reiki is not something that can be invented, Reiki is in every one of us, hidden potential waiting to be discovered, like a gentle flower before blossom. This is so because all things are energy in their essence, and Reiki is nothing else but the knowledge of this energy and its virtuous use.
Reiki is openness, care, selflessness, harmony, a path to a beautiful and fulfilled life. Reiki is health and healing, Reiki is self-improvement, Reiki can be many things, but above all - Reiki is love. Reiki is universal love. Love that does not separate, but is shared between all living things. To practice Reiki means to be a channel of this love and to be in harmony with the universe itself. And when such a harmonious relation is established, than this beautiful love, this energy can be used to help, to teach and to heal others as well as ourselves.
